A first-hand account of our largest single-day rescue operation this year, and what happened next. On a gray morning, the team at Safe Haven Open Arms Rescue received an urgent call about dozens of dogs living in terrible conditions behind an abandoned property outside town. They needed immediate help.

When the rescue vans arrived, the team saw frightened dogs crowded together, some chained, others hiding beneath broken shelters. Many were thin, dirty, and covered in fleas. The rescuers moved slowly, carrying food, water, blankets, crates, and medical supplies. Every dog mattered, and every minute counted. They stayed calm together.

One small brown dog caught a rescuer’s attention. He stood behind a rusty gate, trembling, with a white patch across his chest. His eyes were tired, but he watched every movement carefully. When the gate opened, he backed away. The rescuer sat on the ground and waited patiently beside him.

For nearly an hour, the rescuer remained there. Finally, the dog stepped forward and sniffed her hand. She offered a small piece of chicken. He took it and quickly stepped back. But he returned for another. That tiny act of trust changed everything. The team gently secured him and carried him.
